his last one year functioning as the President of Medical Women's Association of

Nigeria has been challenging and tasking. Amidst financial restraint and
financing we have adhered to our road map of activities. The first quarter of the
Biennium even became more challenging with the emergence of the Covid 19
pandemic worldwide. Edo state has been affected with the virus and we have patients
as well as victims.
Being an eventful quarter, we tried to improve the heath status of our members, other
heath workers, women, children and even men in Edo state.
We have also tried to improve visibility and so many messages encouraging us and
praising us has shown that we are moving in the right direction. We have impacted
other groups, other states and the public with our work and our outreaches. Our
cancer outreaches in the 18 LGA has been embraced by the public and it's most
gratifying. It has been suspended till post Covid 19.
I use this medium to plead with the exco members, we would not reenage on our
stamina and our speed. We would keep the focus and continue to forge ahead. This
next quarter is even going to be more tasking as we practice social distancing. Most of
our physical programs for the month of April were cancelled also so has activities in
May been cancelled. The Children's day Excursion, the Girls boot camp for world
menstruation day, the school program for International boys day since male
involvement is paramount in this Biennium, handwashing day in schools. Hopefully
June programs would hold.
I want to say thank you to all my exco members, Mwan Edo members, our partners,
sponsors, patrons and ambassadors for supporting this first quarter. May God
continue to stregthen bless you abundantly to continue supporting us all through this
Biennium.
It's with great gratitude and satisfaction that I welcome us into the second (2nd)
quarter of the year 2020 in the 2019-2021 Biennium.
God bless you all.

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE CASE OF ASSAULT/RAPE AND
MURDER IN EDO STATE
The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Edo state expresses her
disbelief and utter displeasure with the rape incidence and death of a 100 level
female student, of the University of Benin, on May 30th 2020 by unknown men.
The student that was raped and murdered was known by name as Uwaila Vera
Omozuwa. She was attacked and raped on May 27th 2020 and
died in the University
Of Benin Teaching Hospital.
Let it be noted, that she was brutally raped and died in a terrible way, after being
struck on her head with a fire extinguisher. This type of violence makes us the
Medical Women Association of Nigeria,
Edo state branch, and the whole of
Nigeria shrink in fear. We are outraged even more, that this dastardly incident, took
place in the Church.
MWAN strongly condemns what happened to Uwaila, and any other girl child that
has gone through this devilish act of unkind beings. Mwan condemns rape. Mwan
condemns violence of any kind. Mwan condemns killing a fellow human being.
This case would be reported to our National Association, to further strengthen us, in
the fight for justice for Uwaila.
Mwan Edo also would visit the commissioner of Police, with the SGBV-RT team in
Edo state, to express our utmost displeasure on this case and demand for Justice.
Every life matters, and this incident should not be treated with levity, nor swept
under the rug. The criminals must be caught and prosecuted for carrying out this
wicked act against humanity.
MWAN therefore calls on the government, and all relevant security agencies to
ensure Justice is carried out. Also to protect the lives of women and children, as they
are the most vulnerable in the society.
MWAN stands in solidarity with the family of the deceased in fighting for justice.
We thank the Edo state government for their prompt intervention, as we await the
result of the Inquiry set up.

FG ORDERS POLICE TO INVESTIGATE
OMOZUWA’S RAPE, KILLING ABUSE OF MINOR
Lawan, group seek sff penales, arrest of suspects, MWAN demands jusce
The Federal Government yesterday ordered the police authories to unravel the circumstances
surrounding the rape and murder of a female student of the University of Benin, Vera Uwaila
Omozuwa in Benin City, Edo State.
It also ordered immediate invesgaon of the sexual abuse of a minor in Jigawa State by 14 men, with
a view to bringing the perpetrators to jusce.
In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Minister of Informaon and Culture, Lai Mohammed, described the
gang-rape and murder of Miss Omozuwa as a cruel and barbaric act that offended human sensibility,
as well as anthecal to decency, saying no society would tolerate such depravity. He stressed said the
serial sexual abuse of a minor by 14 men in Jigawa State was not only repulsive, but highly
condemnable.
Consequently, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered immediate transfer
of the invesgaons to the Force headquarters, Abuja. The direcve followed the preliminary report
from the team of invesgators and forensic experts earlier deployed to assist the Edo State Police
Command to probe the incident.
Force Public Relaons Officer, Frank Mba, who disclosed this in Abuja, said the DIG, Force Criminal
Invesgaon Department (FCID), Anthony Ogbizi Michael, would supervise invesgaon of the case.
Besides, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, advocated stringent measures and sffer penales against
perpetrators of rape in the country. Lawan's advocacy was coming against the backdrop of a moon
considered to condemn the increasing cases of rape and brutality against women and girls in Nigeria,
saying with stringent measures and sffer penales in place in Nigeria's criminal and penal code,
defaulters would be weary of the consequences of crime.
Besides, a rights and good governance advocacy group, Make A Difference (MAD) has asked the
Inspector General of Police (IGP) to declare a suspect wanted for his alleged involvement in the rape
and murder of Omozuwa.
This was contained in a statement issued by its Communicaon and Advocacy Director, Lemmy
Ughegbe in Abuja yesterday, saying on his Facebook page, the suspect admied to knowing what led to
Omozuwa's rape and murder.
According to him, in reacon to a news report on Omozuwa's killing, the suspect had posted on
Facebook, “Good for her. Why will she be dang two room mates at the same me?
However, aer several condemnaons from other Facebook users over the comment, he pulled down
the post and deacvated his account. Meanwhile, Edo State chapter of the Medical Women's
Associaon of Nigeria (MWAN), condemned the gruesome murder of Omozuwa, by yet-to-be
idenfied persons in a Church.
The group urged on the Edo State Government and security agencies to unravel and bring those behind
the dastardly act to jusce. Speaking with The Guardian in Benin City, President of MWAN, Edo Branch,
Dr. Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin, advocated protecon of the girl-child and expressed shock over
Omozuwa's murder.
She noted that the girl child was the most vulnerable in society and stressed the need to protect every
life, parcularly women and children, as they remained the most vulnerable.

woman and save-the world: No consent to rape”, Urhoghide-Edigin said.

Hospital.

Vivian sexual assault refferral center for victims which Mwan Edo also is a part
of as a functioning NGO and as part of the management committee managing
the SARC. We commend the Police Force, FIDA , social services and all NGOs
fighting violence against women. We commend Edo state for already
launching it's Sexual Assault Register.
As we begin the 16 day activism against violence of women with the theme :
Orange the world: Fund, Respond, Protect and Collect, Mwan Edo is
commemorating it with a press release, campaigns on TV and radio, attending

Handwashing
Dr Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin, the state President of MWAN, disclosed this in a statement issued in
Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Thursday, October 15, 2020.
This year's Global Hand Washing Day is very important, following the Covid-19 pandemic stunning the
world.
“We were in over 15 schools today to educate the students on the best techniques to use in washing
hands.
“Hand-washing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from geng sick or
contacng COVID-19 and it can keep you healthy.
“Germs and viruses can easily be contacted from other people or surfaces when you touch your eyes,
nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.''
Urhoghide-Edigin said it can also spread through blowing of nose, coughing or sneezing into hands and
then touch other people's hands or common objects.
“You can help yourself and your loved ones to stay healthy by washing your hands oen, especially
during these key mes when you are likely to get and spread germs.''
She said washing of hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs and viruses.
She emphasised that washing of hands has come to stay and must be part of our way of life even in post
COVID-19.
