MwanEdo Commemorates World Epilepsy day by giving a talk on Epilepsy In Gold Mark education Academy, Nova hotel road Benin city, March 23rd 2021. A talk on FM 96.7 on March 28th also held. Mwan Edo members wore purple on March 26th to raise awareness on epilepsy
As part of the activities to mark the Epilepsy awareness week,
the child and adolescent unit and community unit of the FNPH Benin in collaboration with Mwan Edo state visited Gold Mark Education Academy along Nova Hotel road off ugbowo Lagos road.
We gave a talk on Childhood Epilepsy, distributed about 300 hand bills which had information about Epilepsy and gave out notebooks donated by the Medical women association of Nigeria Edo state.
At the end of our talk the head of the school thanked the management of the hospital and the Mwan for their contributions towards the enlightenment of the students. They added that they look forward to seeing us in future programmes.

Mwan Edo Free Health Screening Programs and Commemoration of World Glaucoma week in partnership with the Nigerian Bar Association Benin branch and Dental Centre, Central Hospital March 9th 2021
Mwan Edo held a 2 day free health screening program for NBA members and it was a success. Since it’s World Glaucoma week, eye tests for glaucoma was also carried out. The Mwan Edo team was led by the President.

From our very own Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala being the very first African woman heading the World Trade Organization, to the very first female African-American Vice President of America to Dr Eleanor Nwadinobi the first Nigerian President of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) to Dr Mary Agu, the first female rheumatologist in Africa to our own Prof Obehi Akoria, the first female DCMAC of UBTH to our own Dr Edith Kayode-Iyasere the first Female CMD of Central hospital, to our own Dr Olabisi Ihenyen the first female CMD of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Uselu to our own Dr. Stephania Udi Ighedosa the first female Edo NMA chairman to our own Mwan Edo President Dr Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin who is the first Dental President in 40years and was also the first female VP of ARD SHMB to our own Mwan Edo secretary Dr Nkemdilim Okonji who is a urologist and is in a field perceived to be for men. Mwan Edo: International day for Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation February 6th 2021
FGM is a practice whose origin and significance is shrouded in secrecy, uncertainty and confusion. It is defined as all procedures which involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.
FGM is an unhealthy traditional practice inflicted on women and is widely recognized as a violation of human rights which is deeply rooted in cultural beliefs and perceptions over decades and generations with no easy task for change. Subjection of our girls and women to FGM is legendary.
Nigeria due to its large population has the higher absolute number of cases of FGM worldwide accounting for about one quarter of the estimated 118-130 million circumcised women worldwide.
It’s origin is fraught with controversy either as an initiation ceremony into women hood to ensure virginity and curb promiscuity or to protect female modesty and chastity.
This procedure is carried out either by unskilled, old shriver, unclean men or women in dirty environment with no Anaesthesia or by medical personnels. It is a violation of the fundamental rights of females and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women.
It has no health benefits and could result in complications like Neurogenic shock, haemorrhage, infection, urinary retention, gynaetresia, retention cyst, sexual difficulties and dysfunction.
In labour such women can have prolonged obstructed labour, perineal lacerations, bleeding and urethral injuries.
The mental and psychological agony Attached to FGM is deemed the most serious complication as such women may end up becoming rigid, withdrawn resulting in marital disharmony.
We must say no to medicalization of FGM and any no health worker should be caught carrying out this act.
Finally there is need to abolish this unhealthy practice and a multidisciplinary approach involving the government, health worker, our women, community leaders, our men and the general public with emphasis on its dangers and undesirability of FGM is paramount.
No time for global inactions, let’s unite, fund and Act to end female genital mutilation!
MWAN Edo in the spirit of Christmas distributed Mwan Edo notebooks and Xmas gifts to kids & paraplegics in over 10 Orphanages in a program organised by Joyous Foundation where 10 persons were given awards of recognition for selfless & Humanitarian services in Edo state on Dec 12th 2020.
Our President Dr Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin was one of the awardees.
